On Tuesday December 14th President Michael D. Higgins unveiled the ‘People’s Acorn’ in the gardens of Áras an Uachtaráin. This was a really special day for the current 6th class in Rutland NS as they had the fantastic opportunity to visit Áras an Uachtaráin to witness the unveiling, having been involved in the project since November 2016. The People’s Acorn is a sculpture created by Rachel Joynt. The sculpture is a 1916 themed piece which commemorates the centenary of the 1916 Rising. It contains a time capsule of school childrens’ thoughts and wishes and won’t be opened until 2116. 6th class were fortunate enough to be part of this amazing project and have their thoughts and wishes documented for future generations to read. We were 1 of only 7 schools chosen to be part of the project so it was an amazing honour. Children from every class also donated lots of pencils which were used to create the sculpture. Here is a link to a video which tells you a little bit more about the project. It’s a day we’ll never forget! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5STwsLzEi8
