On Friday morning we went on a trip to Dublinia. We all paid 5 Euro and we got a bus there.
On our way, we saw Christchurch Cathedral.
Our tour guide, Ian, met us dressed as a Viking.
We saw models of Vikings, one was a woman praying to their Gods. We went on a Viking boat and saw their chests. We went into a Viking house and saw their beds and fire. There were animals hanging in the house.
Then we went to the Medieval Times. There was a Black death and if you were bitten by a flea with it, you would die that day. If you got bitten by a rat with it you would die in 3 days. one third of the people in Dublin died of Black death. Children started work at the age of 7 or got married between the ages of 9 and 12. We learned about the barber surgeon and how he cured illnesses.
The most disgusting part, was that people would use a potty to go to the toilet in and then throw it out the window!
It was really interesting and we learned lots. We would recommend everyone to visit it.

Thank you so much to all the children and their families who sent in food for the St Vincent de Paul food hampers. We collected a huge amount of food and the staff in St. Vincent de Paul were very grateful.
As usual, the families in Rutland N.S. have shown themselves to be extremely generous!
We know that some less well off families will have a happier Christmas because of your kindness.
Thank you!
World Book Day was last Thursday. Third class went to the library to do paired reading with the Junior Infants.
We picked out books that we thought Junior Infants would like. Some of the books we read were: Pants, Room on the Broom, Cinderella, Henry Hugglemonster, Spot the Duck and One to ten and Back Again. All of them were colourful, with loads of pictures and easy for young children to understand.
We read the books to the Junior Infants, we showed them the pictures and we asked them questions about the books. We asked them to guess what the book was about, we asked them about colours, we asked them did they like the book and what their favourite character was.
It was nice to read to children that are younger than us. It was a good experience. We hope the junior infants enjoyed it as much as we did.
Well done to all the staff and pupils at Rutland NS for a fantastic Book Week.
All of the children had great fun reading. some read with children from other classes, some with their teacher and some with special guests. We read in the class, in the library and in Easons.
We had a very exciting guest reader in the school, Bill O’Herlihy, who read to the children and parents in 1st classs.
1st class, 2nd class and some pupils from 5th and 6th went to Easons to hear Joe O’Brien read from his fantastic Alfie books.
All the children got vouchers for free books and lots of teachers and classes went to easons to choose these books and buy others.
The Readathon was a great success and has raised lots of money, wghich will be used to buy more books for our school so that our pupils can continue to read interesting, fun and informative books. Thanks to all the children, parents, families and friends who donated!
This week is World Book Week. We have lots of exciting book events happening in Rutland NS and the classes will be doing lots of reading. All of the children will get vouchers to get a free book that they can read at home. They will also be doing a Readathon in school and will be looking for sponsorship at home.
Reading is so important and we hope that the children will spend extra time at home reading this week too.
Before Christmas we had a collection of food for St Vincent de Paul. The response was really overwhelming and we collected over 30 bags full of food. A big thank you to all the children, parnets, family members and stafff who donated so generously and thoughtfully. Once again, we have seen that the Rutland N.S community are the best around.
