Report Writing

During one of their Literacy Lift groups 3rd class have been working hard on report writing. They each chose a topic and wrote a first draft including all of the information they thought was important for their reports. Here they are doing their best writing in order to complete their second draft. Lots of proofreading took place!

Maths Madness!

3rd class have been working so hard at maths and different activities to improve the ways that we figure out problems. Here we are playing a few of our games which involve a lot of thinking logically and looking for patterns.

Senior Infants and 3rd Class paired reading!

For book week third class read lots of books for Senior Infants. The children worked SO well together and we all really enjoyed it! We might do this paired reading a few more times before the end of the year as it went so well. Such great readers and really good listeners! Well done everyone!

Well done to 3rd class who are continuing to borrow from the library each Tuesday morning. We now even have some of the class trained up as library scanners so they take turns doing that job each week. They are experts at this stage!

Well done also to Calvin who has taken a great interest in reading! Every time Ms. Heverin looks over he has his head in a book! Especially the Captain Underpants series of books. Craig brought in a set from home to supplement what we already have in our library collection. They’ll keep us going for a while!

100th Day of School

Rutland NS celebrated the 100th day of school on the 4th of February. The children were working on lots of fun activities around the number 100-flipping a coin 100 times and recording the number of times it landed or heads/tails, making lists of 100 boys/girls names, writing short stories containing exactly 100 words and making board games, as well as many more. Here are some pictures…

Engineers week

Volunteers from ESB take part in the inaugural ‘ESB Engineering Squad’. The initiative, which is part of Engineers Week 2014, aims to promote engineering as a career choice by showcasing personal experiences of engineering and highlighting the critical role of engineering in society to school children across Ireland. Niall from ESB kindly came in to talk with us as part of engineers week. He shared interesting facts about his job and we were very jealous to hear that he gets to travel a lot with his job- to Africa and the Middle East! It was a very informative talk. Well done to everyone who asked questions and listened so well.

Green schools energy flag…

Everybody in Rutland N.S is working hard towards getting our second green flag. As well as continuing to separate our waste in food, paper and general waste bins and keeping our school litter free, we are reducing the amount of energy we use in our school. The energy monitors in the classrooms are checking that lights are turned off, standby switches are off, heat is turned down to 18 degrees and doors are closed where possible. This is good for the environment and for our pockets !

Here are the fourth class children with the code for energy:

Fire officers from Pearse Street fire station came into 3rd class to raise awareness about fire safety in our homes. We asked them lots of questions and we all got a pack with fire checklists to complete at home along with fun colouring and activity pages. We hope everyone will be safe over the Christmas especially with candles! Here is a link to a great activity page and quiz……

It’s that time of year again when it is kind to think of others who are less fortunate and our school is participating in a Christmas food appeal. We are encouraging families to send in non-perishable/long shelf life goods. Please do not bring in food that will go stale or food that needs to be put in the fridge. We are collecting for St. Vincent de Paul and Cuan Álainn . Here are some examples of what you could bring in…….

The Future Scientists!

We had lots of fun last week for ‘Science Week’. We worked with marbles and the effect of ‘stored energy’ to move a stationary marble when the first one is moved; We also experimented with milk, in the experiment named ‘Milk + Soap = MAGIC!’ When we added the food colouring and the soap to the milk, we saw the colours chase the fat in the milk and it almost looked like a marble! We also made our own Rockets – so everyone BEWARE!!

We met poor Eggward last week, who was very sad and lonely. When placed in the water, he sank straight to the bottom 🙁 Luckily, 5th class are ‘egg-stremely’ friendly so we all had a turn to cheer him up by telling him something nice, funny, or just being friendly in general (adding salt each time!). Halloween Bonfires

image

The gardaí visited our classroom yesterday and warned us about the dangers of bonfires around Halloween time. We also read a message from the Lord Mayor of Dublin. Here is the message below……..

Dublin Fire Brigade has issued a warning on the dangers of unregulated bonfires and illegal fireworks, which result in catastrophic injuries each year including the loss of fingers and sometimes entire hands, and severe burns to the body and face.

“All bonfires are illegal – and our message is: do not go to them, and if you are aware of any material being stockpiled, please report it to us in confidence,” Lord Mayor of Dublin Oisín Quinn said.

Maths Week in 5th class!

Today for maths, we abandoned our topic for this week, and took to learning a few ancient maths games! We worked in pairs for ‘Xs and Os’ and ‘Dots and Boxes’ – which only our teachers would know about from our childhood days! Another group learned how to tackle ‘Sudokus’ which we discovered isn’t as complicated as we first thought – just plenty of logic and reasoning which we’re good at in 5th class! Another group had time to play interactive maths games online. Looking forward to what the week will unfold mathematically!

Hundertwasser Construction

We had a great time constructing Hundertwasser inspired buildings,

We decided on how to construct the buildings and stuck on cardboard boxes and cartons with masking tape.

Then we used wallpaper paste and print paper to cover our buildings.

  • going to the dentist
  • if I won the lotto
  • writing a complaint
  • writing a letter to the caretaker Pat

We do our free writing every morning when we come into our class. Some people in the class are great at choosing different topics each day and their copies are so interesting to read!
