Rutland National School

This week is Safer Internet Week across the country. At Rutland NS we are encouraging all of our pupils to ‘Swipe Less and Sleep More’. Research shows that screen addiction goes hand in hand with sleep disturbance. We are seeing many of our pupils arriving at school with less than 8 hours sleep. This is having an impact on their learning in school. If children can reduce their screen time before bed and keep devices out of bedrooms, we believe it will have a positive impact on their sleep and learning.

We had our annual Christmas dinner on Tuesday December 16th! A massive thank you to Karen, Mr. Feeney and our fab parents group for making it all come together. The dinner was delicious and a fun and festive time was had by all!

We had some very special performances today from The Irish Baroque Orchestra.

It was fantastic to see them perform some of the music we have been learning about from Bergie. They played pieces from Bach and Vivaldi and even finished with some lovely Christmas songs.

Thank you so much Bergie, Catherine and everyone involved in such a magical concert.

Our annual Christmas concert is making its return on Thursday 11th December in Sean Mac Dermott Street Church. Doors will open from 6.30pm with the show starting at 7.00pm. Rehearsals are well underway and we look forward to another memorable night full of festive cheer!

Lord Mayor of Dublin, Ray McAdam, kindly invited the student council of Rutland NS to the Mansion House, where we had the opportunity to ask him lots of questions and he showed us around the beautiful, historic building. Despite learning that there is no swimming pool, they were very impressed and inspired!

We are so proud to share the latest edition of our Rutland Rap, performed by our talented and charismatic 4th Class!

The children of Rutland St, along with their families have been invited to take part in this fantastic run event on Saturday 10th May. Transport will be provided to and from the event, leaving from the school and everyone who participates will receive a medal. This is a fantastic opportunity to come together as a community to raise funds for athletics equipment for our school. Adults and older siblings are welcome to run with their child participant, but all who are taking part need to register at https://forms.gle/M5nodPieVx77DWp38 to ensure we have enough transport and medals on the day.

Junior Infants went to Chapters on Parnell Street to use our World Book Day vouchers this week and enjoyed browsing all the amazing books we could choose from.

Rutland N.S has received an award for being a Changemaker school and is now part of the Changemaker Schools Network!

A Changemaker is someone with the skills and confidence to lead change in their home, school and community.

The 4 pillars of a Changemaker school are empathy, leadership, creativity and teamwork.

Our committed Rutland Running Club members had the fantastic opportunity to explore and use the grounds of Morton Stadium – Ireland’s national athletics stadium! We even bumped into Irish Olympian, Sophie Becker, training while we were there, inspiring us to follow in the footsteps of Olympians!

Junior Infants have had a busy week this week, full of exciting, experiential learning – exploring the inside of an ambulance and learning about all the work of paramedics; attending a numeracy event at Charleville Mall Library, where we got to examine photographs that were 105 years old; and enjoying maths activities with some parents at Maths for Fun!

Junior Infants have been learning about the opticians this month and we had the wonderful opportunity to bring this learning to life at Specsavers in the GPO Arcade last week – we got to test each other’s eye sight, try out different lenses, feel contact lenses, and even got to look inside ears and do hearing tests!

Junior Infants had a great time exploring all the scenes at The Moving Crib on Parnell Square this morning – with some spontaneous carol singing en route!

After learning all about the post office this month, we decided to walk down to the GPO and post a class letter to Santa while we were at it. We enjoyed all the Christmas decorations we spotted along the way!

Some of Santa’s little helpers did a great job of decorating the tree in reception. Also check out of the lovely festive and Winter art on the middle corridor!

Here is a roundup of some of the fun that’s been happening in Senior Infants lately! A hot chocolate treat in Nancy Bluebells as a reward for lots of hard work, baking cookies as part of our ‘bia’ topic and Santa’s Workshop in our classroom!

We have some wonderful extra-curricular activities to choose from in Rutland. Ms. Manning and her run club train each Thursday. Ms. Wynne and Ms. McMahon and their choir practise every Tuesday and Ms. Callan and Ms. Doyle and their dance club meet each Thursday.

These are the boys and girls who were selected by their classmates to be in the Student Council. Led by Ms. Bermingham, they do fantastic work around the school!

Here are some photographs of our wonderful Nurture room! Mr. Cherry, Linda and all of the children who visit it have made it such a cosy and happy space!

Junior Infants have been learning all about the Gardaí and had a special visit from them. They got to try out their walkie talkies, try on their gear and some children were even handcuffed!

For their golden time last week, 4th class read their very own narrative pieces of writing to 1st class. The boys and girls had a lovely time!

They tasted lots of different foods that were sour, bitter, salty and sweet!

On a rainy Tuesday, 5th class took a short walk to the Fighting Words offices near our school. We met a lady called Aifric who asked us lots of questions and helped us plan out our story.

Then we went into groups and made our own stories by ourselves.

There was a ‘cranky’ editor who had to give approval for our story and decide if he would print it or not.

We were lucky and he decided it was so good he would print it! We all left with or very own copy. I would like to be an author one day.

Today 6th class was busy doing art. We were doing German pop art.

First we printed our portraits and then we had to trace over them.

We used the windows to help us trace.

We are then going to make dots with markers to make them look like pop art.

We are so excited to have our Scholastic Book Fair returning next week.
As always there will be books for all ages, all interests and all price ranges.
Children will be able to visit the Fair from Monday 18th until Friday 22nd of November.

6th Class had a fantastic morning in Glasnevin Cemetery today. Pat was our tour guide and he told us all about Micheal Collins and how he helped make the Catholic Emancipation. He also showed us the graves of Eamon De Valera and Countess Markievicz.

Katriona O’Sullivan came to Rutland NS last week to share her experiences with the staff.  We were joined by staff from other local schools for a wonderful afternoon listening to Katriona share her story and remind us all of the impact education can have on children.  Thanks for sharing your story with us Katriona!

We had a colourful day in Rutland NS last week when we all wore our odd socks to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day!

We raised over €200 for Down Syndrome Ireland and are really grateful to everyone for their support.

We had a very special evening on Thursday when we held our first ever night time Christmas performance!

The church was filled with family and friends to support our amazing pupils.

They put on some amazing performances to fill our hearts with Christmas cheer.

The evening raised over €4,000 for the school.

A huge thank you to everyone who came to support. It was a very special evening in the history of Rutland National School.

6th Class have had a great start to the year and have been working really hard. At the moment, we are learning all about how Ireland gained its independence. We made a short video all about the 1916 Rising. Click on the link to check it out!

2nd Class were very lucky to take part in Drama with Darren. We also went on our class trip last week to the Viking Splash tour, Stephen’s Green playground and McDonald’s! The biggest part of this year was our First Holy Communion – we had the best day!

Well done to all of our very talent students who all took part in our end of year Arts Show today.

It was a morning filled with wonderful music and very talented actors and actresses!

It’s been a very busy couple of months for the school football team. The school football team has been training very hard every Thursday after school this year. This really showed as the team put in some excellent performance in their 11 a side matches. The team scored some great goals and it was the first time a lot of the team had played on a full sized pitch.

The team also took part in the Spar school 5 a side competition. This section of the competition was for all the schools based in North Inner city Dublin. The boys put in some fantastic performances and went on to win the competition, winning the final 5-1. This means they are now qualified for the all Dublin finals. It was a great achievement for the team and they did the Rutland N.S school badge proud.

We were really lucky today as Music Generation Dublin City stopped by to play us some traditional music.

They brought in traditional Irish instruments such as the uilleann pipes, fiddle and bodhrán.

It was the perfect start to St Patrick’s week in our school.

Don’t forget to wear something green on Thursday!

Our fabulous school turned pink recently to raise money and awareness for Breast Cancer.

We raised over €6,000 euros for Breast Cancer Ireland as the children sang their hearts out for the day during a Karaoke Singathon.

A big THANK YOU to everyone who helped make the day such a wonderful occasion in the school.

To all the parents and local community who donated fantastic prizes we are incredibly grateful.

To the parents association who helped decorate the school and turn us pink for the day, we would be lost without you.

Most importantly to the amazing pupils who dressed in pink, sang their hearts out and helped raise over an incredible €6,300 euro for Breast Cancer – THANK YOU SO MUCH.

It was a day filled with smiles & songs, happiness and hope.

Before the Easter holidays, the fantastic Student Council organised a fundraiser in aid of the Irish Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal.

Everyone wore blue and yellow to show our support and together we raised over €400!!

We are very proud of the amazing support of everyone in Rutland St. NS for such a worthy cause.

3rd class have been very busy so far this term. We celebrated Chinese New Year, St. Brigid’s Day, Seachtain na Gaeilge and St. Patrick’s Day. Everyone has been working hard and having lots of fun! In PE we have been learning how to play basketball. 3rd class have also been doing swimming lessons this term and the class are really enjoying it and making big improvements. Art Club runs every Thursday for the boys and girls in 5th and 6th class. In the first week the children made Kimmy Cantrell inspired cardboard relief masks. We decided to replicate his artwork and make our own relief masks using cardboard.

The boys and girls also took inspiration from Picasso’s portraits when making their own asymmetrical artworks!

Since then, the children have looked at artists such as Jackson Pollock, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Linder Sterling. 

We have spent time making papier-mâché animals, creating self-portrait collages and the children even helped the Elf in Junior Infants decorate their classroom window in time for Christmas! What a fantastic bunch of artists!

2nd Class would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year. We’ve been really enjoying the last few weeks of school and getting into the festive spirit. The boys and girls in 4th Class have been working extremely hard the last few weeks and are looking forward to the last term in school before our Summer holidays.

We have been learning lots about the Egyptians. We completed projects about different aspects of Egyptian life and worked on our presentation skills by teaching our class about what we learnt. We also created a fresco of our class as Pharaohs.

This year has been very different experience for us all in Rutland National School. We have missed the parents coming in and joining us for activities like  Kids Talk,  Maths for Fun and lego with your kid to name just a few! But we are amazed at all the amazing work that has been going on at home throughout the year and so thankful for all the parents and guardians for participating in home in activities like numeracy week and ZOOM AHEAD WITH BOOKS!

Zoom Ahead is coming to an end after 3 weeks of fantastic creative work by kids and their book buddies. Thank you so much for your fabulous work!

We are so happy to all be back to school after the Easter Holidays and look forward to some fun activities and events in our third term.

Every Tuesday all parents are invited to join the Parents walking group. We will walk and discover new places around the city especially places that you can explore with your kids at the weekends and during the holidays. You get to meet other parents and have a chat   and  of course be active. So its great for you physically and mentally … it’s win win! Your well earned reward of a cuppa tea or coffee along the way.

Last week we  were so excited as we welcomed back to school all the kids in Junior Infants, Senior Infants First class & Second class. We were so proud of how hard they all worked from home during the lock down and engaged so well on Seesaw and Zoom.  Our kids are amazing but  a massive THANK YOU to the parents,   grandparents and guardians  for all  their hard work and support. We couldn’t have done it without you all!

We can’t wait to welcome back all the other pupils from 3rd to 6th class on Monday morning.

We have been very excited getting into the Christmas spirit. From making toys in Santa’s workshop to keeping an eye on Eddie the Elf it has been very busy! We also had a special visit to the Church and said a Christmas prayer for all our friends and families. We hope you enjoy our song and poem!

This year in school has been very different in many ways for all the boys and girls, but we are still glad we got to enjoy our Christmas performance in a creative way. First class have really enjoyed getting ready for their Christmas performance with a difference!

The children were also learning about Christmas in the past as part of history this month. They decided to find out about Christmas in the past from someone who has first hand experience – Ms. McKelvey’s granny! The children asked her questions to find out all they wanted to know. With the year that’s in it, we decided to do a virtual interview to gather our information. we had lots of fun doing this project and it brought lots of joy and smiles to everyone as we found new ways to stay connected. Ms McFadden’s class celebrated World Kindness Day. They have thought about ways they can show kindness in school, at home and in their communities.

The Aistear programme has been in full swing in Junior Infants. We have been very busy, learning lots and working hard. We have worked through the theme of autumn, the apple shop and Halloween. 🍏 We were very busy in the Doctors surgery and the Baby clinic. We even built a new hospital for Ted!🐻 We have been using lots of new language and exploring fun ideas. 🌈🌼⭐

4th Class have been working really hard since returning after the Halloween midterm. We have learnt lots about Vikings and completed projects about Viking life in our pods. We even learnt how to write our names using the Viking alphabet.Have a look and see if you can recognize any of the fierce Vikings in their longships getting ready to invade Ireland!

We have also been learning about Norway and about the Aurora Borealis (more commonly known as the Northern Lights). Check out our amazing art work below!

Thank you to all the parents & teachers for taking part in our numeracy week. it was a lot different from our previous years as we couldn’t have all our parents in but we had lots of fun in class and at home learning all about direction and positions.

 This week we have been learning all about positions and directions. We got some amazing new resources and Junior infants loved playing with all the games.

We also have to search every day for Emma’s cheeky cat and mischievous teddy.

The cat was hiding under the giraffe and the teddy was hanging over the corridor!

Senior Infants have settled so well into their new class. Here is a little video showing some of their new routines and what they get up to each day.

Hope you are all getting on well and helping to mind each other at home.

Its every strange time at the moment and you might have some worries but the most important thing you can do at the moment is stay calm, stay positive and keep your mind and body healthy. Remember to do activities that make your mind and body feel all those lovely positive emotions like happiness, pride, love,kindness, friendship , excitement and achievement ( for example exercise, reading a book, drawing and creating, playing games, helping out at home and having a chat with someone you care about.

It’s so important to take care of yourself and your family at this time. You are all such wonderful kids and you make Rutland such a fabulous school I can only imagine how helpful and kind you are all being at home .

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, 1st class have been talking and thinking all about love. Ms. O’Herlihy decided to let them share their thoughts on camera!

4th class did lots of great work leading up to Hallowe’en. We made our very own clay monsters, designed costumes we thought Ms. Bermingham should wear to school and recreated personalised versions of ‘The Scream’.
