5th Class adventure to Fighting Words

On a rainy Tuesday, 5th class took a short walk to the Fighting Words offices near our school. We met a lady called Aifric who asked us lots of questions and helped us plan out our story.

Then we went into groups and made our own stories by ourselves.

There was a ‘cranky’ editor who had to give approval for our story and decide if he would print it or not.

We were lucky and he decided it was so good he would print it! We all left with or very own copy. I would like to be an author one day.

1916 Rising

6th Class have had a great start to the year and have been working really hard. At the moment, we are learning all about how Ireland gained its independence. We made a short video all about the 1916 Rising. Click on the link to check it out!

The 1916 Rising

Hugh Lane Art Gallery

Before the Easter break, 6th class paid the Hugh Lane Gallery a visit.
The class took time to examine the artwork and made fantastic sketches of their favourite pieces to discuss. There were lots of interesting conversations about art.

We also studied the beautiful stained glass window artwork to replicate during our own art lesson. The children took inspiration from the work of Harry Clake and added their own ideas to their work.

The children have also been learning about Irish history and the class found lots of paintings depicting famous figures such as Micheal Collins.

It was a fantastic trip with our creative 6th class students!

Butterfly Fly Away

Ms. Bermingham’s Junior Infants have been learning all about caterpillars for the past few weeks. We even had some caterpillars join our class! Today, we were finally able to release our butterflies in our wonderful school garden. It was lovely to have 6th class join us as we let our beautiful butterflies go. We told them to say a special hello to Ollie for us.

Fundraiser for the Ukraine

Before the Easter holidays, the fantastic Student Council organised a fundraiser in aid of the Irish Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal.

Everyone wore blue and yellow to show our support and together we raised over €400!!

We are very proud of the amazing support of everyone in Rutland St. NS for such a worthy cause.

Thank you everyone for your incredible generosity.

Busy times in 3rd class

3rd class have been very busy so far this term. We celebrated Chinese New Year, St. Brigid’s Day, Seachtain na Gaeilge and St. Patrick’s Day. Everyone has been working hard and having lots of fun! In PE we have been learning how to play basketball. 3rd class have also been doing swimming lessons this term and the class are really enjoying it and making big improvements. We hope everyone has a Happy St Patrick’s Day! Lá Fhéile Pádraig Shona Duit!

Halfway through our first year at school!

It is hard to believe we are almost halfway through the year. Junior infants have settled into ‘big school’ so well. Ms. Bermingham is so proud of them and how much they have learned so far. This month, we learned all about the North and South Poles. We were Polar Explorers in our role play corner where we travelled to the Arctic/Antarctic. We made igloos with our blocks and sensory snow. We also played with water and did some floating and sinking experiments. The children have learned so many new words relating to our Polar theme, like “hatch”, “huddle”, “flipper”, “frost”, and “waddle.” It is great to hear them using them in class with one another.

We were so excited to get hot lunches this month and the boys and girls are loving them! They get so excited for lunchtime! We also celebrated Stephen’s birthday this month and surprised him by singing ‘Happy Birthday’ and making him lovely birthday cards.

Art Club

Art Club runs every Thursday for the boys and girls in 5th and 6th class. In the first week the children made Kimmy Cantrell inspired cardboard relief masks.65773438996--15ABE9F9-59FB-49F7-90D8-D2D0A337AA11 We decided to replicate his artwork and make our own relief masks using cardboard.

The boys and girls also took inspiration from Picasso’s portraits when making their own asymmetrical artworks!

Since then, the children have looked at artists such as Jackson Pollock, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Linder Sterling. IMG-1112 (1)

We have spent time making papier-mâché animals, creating self-portrait collages and the children even helped the Elf in Junior Infants decorate their classroom window in time for Christmas! What a fantastic bunch of artists!IMG-1508

1st Class Christmas Performance

This year in school has been very different in many ways for all the boys and girls, but we are still glad we got to enjoy our Christmas performance in a creative way. First class have really enjoyed getting ready for their Christmas performance with a difference!

As a class, the children shared ideas to make their drama based on the song ‘You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch’. we had lots of fun creating the drama which tells us all about how special and important Christmas is. You can watch the video by clicking the link here:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1R391BZrQoBDGMADaknni7cOewQaUBXvI/view?usp=sharing

The children were also learning about Christmas in the past as part of history this month. They decided to find out about Christmas in the past from someone who has first hand experience – Ms. McKelvey’s granny! The children asked her questions to find out all they wanted to know. With the year that’s in it, we decided to do a virtual interview to gather our information. we had lots of fun doing this project and it brought lots of joy and smiles to everyone as we found new ways to stay connected. You can watch the video here:

5th Class Christmas Performance

Although we are sad we cannot invite our families and friends in to school to see our performance this year, we are so excited we still get to wish everyone a happy Christmas in a special way. 5th class worked very hard on both of their performances this year.

First, the boys and girls performed a drama to the poem ‘Christmas 2020: Love Will See Us Through’. The poem tells the story of a different kind of Christmas this year due to the Coronavirus pandemic and has a very special message. You can watch the drama here:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WQTNYnG1hEsOxe7Qagnda9mnQVJIvA-S/view?usp=sharing

5th class also performed ‘Oh Holy Night’ when we visited the church to speak about the Christmas story.

We wish everyone a happy, safe, and peaceful Christmas.

Christmas is almost here…

5th class are getting into the Christmas spirit after a very busy term full of learning and fun (as you can see in the pictures!) The boys and girls made some beautiful clay Christmas decorations and drew some wonderful snowglobes. They even made their own Advent wreath and Advent calendar filled with random acts of kindness as we countdown to our Christmas holidays.

It was a wonderful term, especially being reunited after staying apart for so long during the school closures. We wish everyone a happy, safe, and peaceful Christmas.

Nollaig Shona!

Here are some pictures of some of the fun activities 4th class got up to before the school closures. We learned about Chinese New Year with some parents, used what we learned about shapes to go on a shape hunt around our school and we started drumming! Hopefully it won’t be too long before we get back to school to have more fun together. All the boys and girls are working very hard and using Seesaw really well. I love being able to see the work you’re doing at home so keep it up! I hope everyone is keeping well and safe.

We discussed what promises we might make for Lent and of course had some tasty pancakes!!5F72E922-A28F-416F-AD30-AEF1B60D43AC 3ACEF3DF-75B8-4584-9A1F-25BFD4ED0463 977D5EA4-D8E0-4700-9301-04110DCA1107 6ABB2775-4B2E-4228-9890-6BD04477027A A1B65798-2943-4265-B8B8-B0193CE06F46 1432D3B9-6DB5-4931-8350-3C90F9598688

Big and Little Readers

The boys and girls in 4th class have been working extremely hard writing narrative stories. As a special treat, we read our stories to Ms. McKelvey’s Senior Infants. The boys and girls really enjoyed sharing their hard work. Some of the boys and girls in Senior Infants even showed some of their reading to their new friends in 4th class!

4th Class Projects

The boys and girls in 4th class have had a busy start to the year.  We learned about Dublin long ago, noting the similarities and differences to Dublin today. We worked in groups to create excellent projects all about Dublin. We also explored how the breathing system works and made our own set of lungs! Have a look at some of our hard work.

6th class visit Áras an Uachtaráin

On Tuesday December 14th President Michael D. Higgins unveiled the ‘People’s Acorn’ in the gardens of Áras an Uachtaráin. This was a really special day for the current 6th class in Rutland NS as they had the fantastic opportunity to visit Áras an Uachtaráin to witness the unveiling, having been involved in the project since November 2016. The People’s Acorn is a sculpture created by Rachel Joynt. The sculpture is a 1916 themed piece which commemorates the centenary of the 1916 Rising. It contains a time capsule of school childrens’ thoughts and wishes and won’t be opened until 2116. 6th class were fortunate enough to be part of this amazing project and have their thoughts and wishes documented for future generations to read. We were 1 of only 7 schools chosen to be part of the project so it was an amazing honour. Children from every class also donated lots of pencils which were used to create the sculpture. Here is a link to a video which tells you a little bit more about the project. It’s a day we’ll never forget! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5STwsLzEi8

Fourth Class Girl Qualifies for CTYI

Congratulations Brooke

Congratulations to Brooke in 4th Class who has qualified for DCU’s CTYI (Centre for Talented Youth) programme! This is a huge achievement for a ten year old! Most people don’t go to university and take courses until they’re nearly 20! We are all so proud of Brooke! Competition is fierce but Brooke kept her focus through the grueling 2 hour exam!

At CTYI  the courses are in topics not usually covered in the primary curriculum e.g. Astronomy, App making, Chemistry, Codes and Ciphers, Experimental Physics, Chinese, Strategy and Games, Novel and Play Writing, Forensic Science, The World of Harry Potter, Art Design. We can’t wait for her to report back to us all here in fourth!!!

Brooke is the first person in 4th to be accepted onto the programme, just like Katherine Gobels was the first to send a man into space using maths!

Engineer’s Week in Fourth

This week is Engineer’s week. 4th class have been learning all about engineering and different types of engineers. On Thursday Dr Ian from UCD came into our class. He is a bio-mechanical engineer. This means he uses science to make things to help sick people get better.

He showed us the heart tissue he is growing in his lab to help people who have heart attacks. We dissected a heart last month so we had lots of questions! Science is so cool!

We explored hair, fingerprints, bees, coins, sugar, tissue and coffee through the microscope. We then had to use our new scientific skills to solve a mystery just like forensic scientists!

This is what we imagine an engineer to be...

Data mad!!

Boys and Girls in Junior Infants have gone DATA MAD! They made Weather Block Diagrams to track the most common type of weather during the month of February!

They also worked sooooo hard to find out the most common coloured bear in the bear box! They lined the bears up in 10’s and counted using skip counting! 🙂 The most common coloured bear was RED! There are 68 red bears in the bear box.

They did the same with different coloured links! 2 of the children counted 200 red links using skip counting in 10’s!!!

Red seems to be the most popular colour in Junior Infants!
