Here are photos of the girls re-arranging words of sentences they composed. They are working so hard at ‘sounding out’ and having a go at writing! Well done girls 🙂
We got into the spirit of Halloween and made Rice Krispie pumpkins.
First we melted butter and marsh mallows.
Then we poured a small bit into a little bowl for the green mix. We added green food colouring to that.
Into the big bowl we added red and yellow food colouring to make orange.
We then added Rice Krispies to both bowls & moulded the pumpkins using spoons. We decorated them with raisins.
They were delicious! 🙂

The new school year always brings lots of new activities and fresh energy with it. One of the many exciting activities happening now in Rutland National School is the Student Council. Two members in all classes from 1st to 6th were chosen. Every class listened to all the students who put themselves forward to be on the Student Council. They then voted on the children who they believed would best represent them. Many children had brilliant ideas about how we can keep making Rutland National School a fantastic place for learning and growing.
Well done to all children who spoke in front of their classes, for all the fantastic ideas shared and to the elected Student Council members!
Today, the Student Council made their badges, which they will wear on their uniform so all children can identify these great role models. The Student Council will next meet on the 25th October. Before that, each representative must record all the ideas and issues their class has that they would like the Student Council to know about and to act on if they can.
Emma and I are really looking forward to the next meeting where we can hear the ideas that are buzzing around all of the classrooms!
Here are some photos of Ms. Heverin’s groups working hard. We were writing narratives today and making words using magnetic letters and play doh! We also played an interactive word bingo game on the computer! We got the week off to a great start! 🙂
Junior infants took ‘selfies’ on the school tablets to help them draw self portraits. They examined their face and looked for less obvious traits that they would usually forget about, like freckles and eyebrows. There was a lot of excitement when they got to play games on the tablets during golden time! 🙂
This month we have been working really hard on our Irish reading strategies. We learnt this clever poem to help us remember some tricky Irish words hidden in na ceisteanna!
Click to listen! Éist anois!
Click for the words: na_ceisteanna-pdf
We are settling in well, making lots of new friends and having so much fun!
Well done to Helen, Jayden, Brody, Seán, Kyle, Ke Xin, Amia and Alex – our pupils of the week and most improved pupils! As a reward they got to make rice krispie buns- YUM!

Isabelle & Armandas worked so hard out in the school garden today with Ms Heverin. We learned all about full/empty, more/less, nearly full/nearly empty. We then did a worksheet based on capacity! We also took advantage and did our sounds with two letters AND our reading out in the sun! Here are some photos of the fun we had!
Junior infants have been playing doctors all this week! They have been busy building hospitals from blocks, making body parts with play dough, creating their own X-rays from black paper and ear buds and learning all about what doctors have to check when someone is sick!
If anyone is sick in Rutland street get down to junior infants! We’ll look after you!!
The children in Doodle Den have based their work on the book ‘Handa’s Surprise’ for the past two weeks!
It is a story about a girl who is taking lots of delicious fruits to her friend. Some animals cause a bit of mischief and Handa gets a surprise! 🙂
Here are some photos of us tasting fruit from the story, playing a bingo game to learn the words from the story and modelling our animal masks that we made for art with Mr. Nolan. We had such a busy two weeks!

Anne from the Heritage Council was in Rutland NS last Wednesday and she brought two hens (Bluebell and Primrose) and two lambs (Séamus and Seán) with her!
Here are some photos of Junior Infants holding, petting and feeding the animals! 🙂
We had great fun in Doodle Den reading a story about a cat who had six dinners, six beds and six different owners! His name was Sid! Some of us thought he was naughty and some of us thought he was clever!
Here are some photos of our activities- responding to the story through art (clay cats) and writing!
We celebrated Lorena’s 6th birthday on Monday in Junior Infants. What a lovely treat to come back to after the Easter holidays!
Junior infants made leprechauns faces for Patrick’s day! They look like real leprechauns!
We attended an amazing take on of “The three little pigs” acted by 5th class.
We walked up to the GPO and posted letters to Kerry, Cork and Dublin.
We inspected the pillars outside and found bullet holes from 100 years ago!!
We snuck along Moore street, watching out for snipers and visited where James Connolly was shot in the leg. We waved our white flags like nurse O’farrell did, who helped us to surrender to the British.
Here are some of the photos relating to all of the above!!!
We held our Proclamation Day 2016 in the hall this morning. Thanks to all pupils, teachers and SNAs for all the fantastic work with art, songs, readings, and we even had a rap about 1916 in the line up! It was a memorable day.
Here is a photo of Mr Cherry addressing the crowd and the teachers reading out the Proclamation.

As usual, the families in Rutland N.S. have shown themselves to be extremely generous!
We know that some less well off families will have a happier Christmas because of your kindness.
Thank you!
