This week is Engineer’s week. 4th class have been learning all about engineering and different types of engineers. On Thursday Dr Ian from UCD came into our class. He is a bio-mechanical engineer. This means he uses science to make things to help sick people get better.
He showed us the heart tissue he is growing in his lab to help people who have heart attacks. We dissected a heart last month so we had lots of questions! Science is so cool!
We explored hair, fingerprints, bees, coins, sugar, tissue and coffee through the microscope. We then had to use our new scientific skills to solve a mystery just like forensic scientists!
The children from Senior Infants and First Class who come to me every morning work so hard. As well as reading LOADS of books, they write a story every day! Here are some samples of their work. 🙂
Maciek……Senior Infants
Isabelle….. First Class
Cayden…… First Class
Jonathan…….Senior Infants
Here are some photos of Mikaela, Cameron, Joy and Kacper playing nicely together in their social group!
They played doctors, card games, babies and house!
They were so kind to each other. 🙂
Boys and Girls in Junior Infants have gone DATA MAD! They made Weather Block Diagrams to track the most common type of weather during the month of February!
They also worked sooooo hard to find out the most common coloured bear in the bear box! They lined the bears up in 10’s and counted using skip counting! 🙂 The most common coloured bear was RED! There are 68 red bears in the bear box.
They did the same with different coloured links! 2 of the children counted 200 red links using skip counting in 10’s!!!
Red seems to be the most popular colour in Junior Infants!
Boys and girls in Junior Infants were helping Miss Crosse decide what colour to paint her house! They came up with so many lovely colours she couldn’t decide. The boys and girls thought of a great plan and made a bar chart to find out the most popular colour in Junior Infants!
Miss Crosse can’t wait to paint her house RED! 🙂
On Friday morning we went on a trip to Dublinia. We all paid 5 Euro and we got a bus there.
On our way, we saw Christchurch Cathedral.
Our tour guide, Ian, met us dressed as a Viking.
We saw models of Vikings, one was a woman praying to their Gods. We went on a Viking boat and saw their chests. We went into a Viking house and saw their beds and fire. There were animals hanging in the house.
Then we went to the Medieval Times. There was a Black death and if you were bitten by a flea with it, you would die that day. If you got bitten by a rat with it you would die in 3 days. one third of the people in Dublin died of Black death. Children started work at the age of 7 or got married between the ages of 9 and 12. We learned about the barber surgeon and how he cured illnesses.
The most disgusting part, was that people would use a potty to go to the toilet in and then throw it out the window!
It was really interesting and we learned lots. We would recommend everyone to visit it.
Well another Valentine’s Day has rolled around so what better time than now to dissect a heart?
Fourth Class have been looking at the human circulatory system and how the heart works! On Valentine’s day we became heart surgeons and explored some sheep hearts! We then teamed up with Science Club for some more investigations!
- When blood enters the valves close!!
- The valves are open…
- Da Vinci was one of the first scientists to sketch the heart!
- Dr Sammy leads the dissection
- Dr. Keegan labels the chambers with Bilguun in Science Club
- Dr Da Silva gets ready to hold the heart
- Dr Rooney explains that the Aorta (the main artery) has a bigger diameter than our little fingers!! We could feel all the way down!!
- Dr Rock in consultation with her surgical team
- Identifying the upper chambers of the heart
- Our hearts are the size of a fist!
- Exploring the sheep heart
- Dr Chen located the heart on his patient Mr Quinn
Junior infants have been taking part in so many fun activities for Numeracy Week. They did a Maths Trail around the school where they answered questions that were stuck up on the walls and parents came in and played maths games with boys and girls up in the library! Big thanks to Emma and all the parents who took part. They had great fun!
Some of our present 6th class when they were in Junior Infants! 🙂
This week past pupil Ciara came to our class for work experience. She taught us two ISL signed songs -Avicii’s Wake Me Up, and Here I am Lord. Check out us out below!
For the last few weeks the Rutland Street engineers have been designing, building and modifying roller coasters!
“We all learnt about force!! The marble needs speed to complete the loop successfully… and the best way to build up this force??? Gain some height!!”
-Temuulen
Check out our inventions on the second floor!!!
Well done to the boys and girls who got pupil of the week and most improved for last week! Zac, Armandas, Toni, Sophie, Maciek, Seán, Connie and Eddie. We were cooking healthy pizzas today. We put pineapple, ham and cheese on them! 🙂
Fourth class are super scientists! This week, after months of investigations, experiments and hard work they presented their project at the RDS Young Scientist Exhibition!
They were grilled by the judges for nearly 20 minutes (eek!), interviewed by RTE and National Newspapers, but it was all worth it… because… they came home with an AWARD!
"...Excellent project, outstanding drawings, incredible models... one of the most talented hardest working groups of young scientists we've seen today..." -Evelyn Cusack, RDS Judge.
Mary Mary Quite Contrary How Does Our Inner City Sheltered Garden Grow?
Brief: “Ms HH was always giving out about how long it took myself and Frankie to water the garden, so we decided to see if we could figure out a way to make the garden do the work, and water itself, and after a few months and LOTS of hard work we did” -Brooklyn
Watch this space for more info from the scientists themselves! For now, see if you can spot any familiar faces on Thursday’s news2day!

The boys and girls I take each day for reading and writing are working so hard! They have eased back into the swing of things and remember SO much from before Christmas! Well done everyone! 🙂
They each have a word dice which you can see in the picture. We made them together using tissue boxes! We change the words each week after they get too easy! We love rolling the dice on the ground and reading the words!
This week fourth class made their own Christmas dinner!
Everyone worked their Santa socks off peeling, cutting, cooking, dicing chopping, draining, melting, mixing, whisking and presenting their food. We were all delighted to sit down together to enjoy a three course Christmas dinner after a hard days work!!

The boys and girls in Junior Infants had a very active Friday. They visited the Pre-school playground for being so well behaved all week, wrote numbers in sand, wrote rainbow Tricky Words and played lots of maths games on the interactive white board. Our Elf was busy moving around and causing mischief.
The boys and girls in the green schools committee met today to discuss ways that we could save water as a school and to make posters to raise awareness.
They had some great ideas!
-Turn off the tap when washing your hands and wash them quickly.
-Use excess water from bottles to water the plants.
-Make sure the water bottle doesn’t overflow when filling it.
We are going to start reading the water meter regularly to figure out how much water we are using as a school, we will then try and reduce this!
Well done to Deya in 6th class who was the winner of the ‘Doodle for Rutland’! Her amazing creation can be seen on our home page. I love how she incorporated the school crest into her design.
Erin in 5th class was runner up and her doodle will appear on the site later in the year.
Thank you to all of the children who submitted entries. It was so difficult to choose a winner!!
Well done to the 63 children who had full attendance in September & October! They had an ice-cream party, which they enjoyed – even in chilly November!

This month we decided to form our own Book Club! On Tuesday afternoons we cluster into small groups around the library and excitedly discuss the books we’re reading. Every group picks their own books. Sometimes we take it in turns and sometimes we take a vote!
We make predictions, defend our opinions and share our favourite parts! We love to read! We read a few pages for homework, during D.E.A.R. time and sometimes we sneak a few pages when we have finished our lessons (and checked our work of course).
Every week or so we write or record our reviews, rate the books and even recommend them to our families and friends (if we give them a top review!).
This week we are reading:
Dirty Bertie, by David Roberts
Goosebumps: Curse of Mummy’s Tomb by R.L. Stine
Narnia by C.S. Lewis
Out of Nowhere, by Gerard Whelan
Who’s a Big Bully Then? by Michael Morpurgo
Check our our reading gallery!

Ali reads the first chapter of Michael Morpurgo’s “Who’s a Big Bully Then?” to Fegor and Makela. The author was highly recommended by Sienna who has just finished his book entitled “An Eagle in the Snow”.
On Thursdays, our class give our hard working teachers Ms Harte Hayes and Ms McAndrew a break and we become the teachers!!!
During the week we highlight questions we can’t quite work out in mental maths and on Thursdays we break up into small groups and teach each other!
“Mateusz and Anand explained the rolling the dice question differently and helped me to understand it. Its still a bit confusing but they are going to check in with me during the week and so we all have it mastered for next week!” -Lexi
“I helped Jadine to master the perimeter question, we have a saying perimeter is all the way around the pitch, and now she knows it too, we all enjoy helping each other” -Brooke
“Its fun to help others, at first it was hard to explain how I understand how to do it, but with a bit of practice it became easier, and now I really enjoy it!” Abbie
“I like explaining things, and helping others, and working with my friends. I always feel great when I help others to understand” -Temuulen
“Is maths over? No way. Wait, can I have 1 more minute, I almost have it! Yes I got it!!” -Brooklyn
This year we have a Science Club at Rutland!! The club, made up of students from 2nd-4th class meets once a week for an hour of hands-on science activities!
For the first half of term we are investigating space science!!!
We all adopted a planet, discovered some incredibly interesting facts and together made a solar system!!!
We also looked at gravity and air resistance with Felix Baumgartner & Brian Cox (on YouTube) . We were inspired to design our very own parachutes!!! Material choice, shape and surface area were important elements of our design process!
We tested our parachutes on the stairs 🙂
We also made rockets to launch ourselves into space, and will post these
It’s maths week this week and we are trying so hard at memorising, ordering and writing his numbers! Well done! 🙂
- Maths award!
- Ordering numbers
Here are photos of the girls re-arranging words of sentences they composed. They are working so hard at ‘sounding out’ and having a go at writing! Well done girls 🙂
We got into the spirit of Halloween and made Rice Krispie pumpkins.
First we melted butter and marsh mallows.
Then we poured a small bit into a little bowl for the green mix. We added green food colouring to that.
Into the big bowl we added red and yellow food colouring to make orange.
We then added Rice Krispies to both bowls & moulded the pumpkins using spoons. We decorated them with raisins.
They were delicious! 🙂

The new school year always brings lots of new activities and fresh energy with it. One of the many exciting activities happening now in Rutland National School is the Student Council. Two members in all classes from 1st to 6th were chosen. Every class listened to all the students who put themselves forward to be on the Student Council. They then voted on the children who they believed would best represent them. Many children had brilliant ideas about how we can keep making Rutland National School a fantastic place for learning and growing.
Well done to all children who spoke in front of their classes, for all the fantastic ideas shared and to the elected Student Council members!
Today, the Student Council made their badges, which they will wear on their uniform so all children can identify these great role models. The Student Council will next meet on the 25th October. Before that, each representative must record all the ideas and issues their class has that they would like the Student Council to know about and to act on if they can.
Emma and I are really looking forward to the next meeting where we can hear the ideas that are buzzing around all of the classrooms!
Here are some photos of Ms. Heverin’s groups working hard. We were writing narratives today and making words using magnetic letters and play doh! We also played an interactive word bingo game on the computer! We got the week off to a great start! 🙂
Junior infants took ‘selfies’ on the school tablets to help them draw self portraits. They examined their face and looked for less obvious traits that they would usually forget about, like freckles and eyebrows. There was a lot of excitement when they got to play games on the tablets during golden time! 🙂
This month we have been working really hard on our Irish reading strategies. We learnt this clever poem to help us remember some tricky Irish words hidden in na ceisteanna!
Click to listen! Éist anois!
Click for the words: na_ceisteanna-pdf
We are settling in well, making lots of new friends and having so much fun!
Well done to Helen, Jayden, Brody, Seán, Kyle, Ke Xin, Amia and Alex – our pupils of the week and most improved pupils! As a reward they got to make rice krispie buns- YUM!
Keep up the good behaviour!
Here are some photos of us busy at work!
This week our class took on the “Cup Stack Challenge”. We had to make a pyramid out of 6 plastic cups (3 on the bottom, 2 in the middle, 1 on the top). Easy right? Well, in this challenge we couldn’t touch or move the cups with our hands, even if a cup fell over onto the floor!!
Instead, each person held onto one of the strings that were attached to a rubber band around the base of a cup. We worked together, pulling the rubber band apart and then bringing them back together over the cups. It was all about patience and team work!
It was lots of fun, and after we mastered our technique, we raced each other with different groups winning each time!

Isabelle & Armandas worked so hard out in the school garden today with Ms Heverin. We learned all about full/empty, more/less, nearly full/nearly empty. We then did a worksheet based on capacity! We also took advantage and did our sounds with two letters AND our reading out in the sun! Here are some photos of the fun we had!
Junior infants have been playing doctors all this week! They have been busy building hospitals from blocks, making body parts with play dough, creating their own X-rays from black paper and ear buds and learning all about what doctors have to check when someone is sick!
If anyone is sick in Rutland street get down to junior infants! We’ll look after you!!
The children in Doodle Den have based their work on the book ‘Handa’s Surprise’ for the past two weeks!
It is a story about a girl who is taking lots of delicious fruits to her friend. Some animals cause a bit of mischief and Handa gets a surprise! 🙂
Here are some photos of us tasting fruit from the story, playing a bingo game to learn the words from the story and modelling our animal masks that we made for art with Mr. Nolan. We had such a busy two weeks!
Well done to Calvin for winning a medal representing Corinthians Boxing club.
