The boys and girls in 4th class have been working extremely hard writing narrative stories. As a special treat, we read our stories to Ms. McKelvey’s Senior Infants. The boys and girls really enjoyed sharing their hard work. Some of the boys and girls in Senior Infants even showed some of their reading to their new friends in 4th class!
Well Done everyone!

To celebrate Science Week, third class have been learning about liquids and density. Today we made lava lamps using oil, water, food coloring and fizzy tablets. We really enjoyed conducting the experiment. See our amazing results below!

The boys and girls in 4th class have had a busy start to the year. We learned about Dublin long ago, noting the similarities and differences to Dublin today. We worked in groups to create excellent projects all about Dublin. We also explored how the breathing system works and made our own set of lungs! Have a look at some of our hard work.
Every September the Botanical gardens become an enchanting place with sculptural treasures . This year second class and their parents went on the bus to the Botanic gardens. We used out maps to find all the sculptures
We found some very interesting art works. We also looked at the trees and learnt all about Autumn and all the changes to the trees.
We explored different sculptures and spoke about all the different features.
We loved that the parents joined us and that the sun shone all morning!
What an incredible event Miss Baileys Class held today for International Womens Day. All the children researched and wrote about different famous women in history. The children also created dinner plates and re created the famous ‘Dinner Party installation art work by feminist artist Judy Chicago. The parents were invited to attend and the children spoke and answered questions about their famous women. What a celebration!
The pupils and staff at Rutland N.S. are so looking forward to Christmas. But we are also aware that it can be a very difficult time for some people. For that reason we are supporting St Vincent de Paul’s great work and organising a Food Appeal.
Families can send in any non-perishable foods between now and Thursday 20th and we will collect them all and deliver them to SVDP.

On Tuesday the 16th of October, Ms O’Loughlin’s third class were lucky enough to visit Liberty Hall to hear author Pamela Butchart speak about her children’s books.

The class were already familiar with her book, The Phantom Lollipop Man and they got to hear about how she used her old school in Scotland as an inspiration for her books.

The children had great fun acting out the characters and some people were lucky enough to be chosen to go onstage to help create a new story. It was a very enjoyable trip.
This September we had so much fun on our treasure hunt around the Botanic Gardens searching for the amazing sculptures with our Parents. The sun shone as we explored the Botanical gardens looking for sculptures and signs of Autumn
We discovered some unusual works of art some we could touch and some that were too delicate to touch
Junior Infants went on their school tour to Dublin Zoo last Thursday. They had a great day and saw lots of animals! Here they are enjoying themselves.
Senior Infants had so much fun learning number skills with Emma and the parents this morning. It was such a sunny day we went up to the yard. It was the best morning EVER! Thanks everyone who helped out.[ngg_images source=”galleries” container_ids=”36″ display_type=”photocrati-nextgen_basic_imagebrowser” ajax_pagination=”0″ order_by=”sortorder” order_direction=”ASC” returns=”included” maximum_entity_count=”500″]

Senior Infants and some parents came to view our amazing art exhibition.
There were two sides to each picture. On one side the children chose their favourite part of their favourite book and drew a picture of it. On the other side, their “Book Buddy” drew their favourite part of their favourite story.
They look great and we had lots of fun doing them!
Senior Infants were working very hard today! They are gaining confidence using a number line to add and subtract. They love improving their counting skills by playing fun games!

Here in Rutland NS we have been learning Lamh signs, so we love this video signed by mothers and their children who have Down syndrome
At a recent Green Schools meeting we chose our two Litter Monitors for the month!
These children will go around the school every Friday afternoon picking up any litter they see around the school – hopefully not very much!
They will make sure to put the litter into the correct bags and have already learned about what goes into the recycling bag and what goes into the general waste bag.
A big thanks to them both!
Ms Harte Hayes did some amazing science lessons with us. We learned all about forces and how they affect us. We saw how astronauts use parachutes to land safely on earth.
Then we worked in teams to create the best parachute for a toy teddy using various materials.
We tested our creations by standing on the table and letting them float to the ground. The best parachute floated the slowest to the ground so out teddies had a soft landing.
Children between the ages of 5 and 10 can register to bring their teddies to the Teddy Bear hospital set up in Trinity College on March 10th

We have a Travel Agents in our classroom where we are booking and researching holidays, making lists for holidays and exchanging money.
We are building Sydney Harbour Bridge this week and will be building other famous landmarks and buildings in the coming weeks.

The Green Schools Committee met last Friday to discuss ways we could save water as a school. They watched a slideshow presentation before discussing it and brainstorming new ideas.
At our next meeting they will design posters to display around the school so that we can raise awareness about this important issue.
On Tuesday December 14th President Michael D. Higgins unveiled the ‘People’s Acorn’ in the gardens of Áras an Uachtaráin. This was a really special day for the current 6th class in Rutland NS as they had the fantastic opportunity to visit Áras an Uachtaráin to witness the unveiling, having been involved in the project since November 2016. The People’s Acorn is a sculpture created by Rachel Joynt. The sculpture is a 1916 themed piece which commemorates the centenary of the 1916 Rising. It contains a time capsule of school childrens’ thoughts and wishes and won’t be opened until 2116. 6th class were fortunate enough to be part of this amazing project and have their thoughts and wishes documented for future generations to read. We were 1 of only 7 schools chosen to be part of the project so it was an amazing honour. Children from every class also donated lots of pencils which were used to create the sculpture. Here is a link to a video which tells you a little bit more about the project. It’s a day we’ll never forget! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5STwsLzEi8
The student council walked down to Tesco in the Jervis shopping centre yesterday to collect money raised through the blue token fundraising. We received €463! The money was used to help fund our annual Christmas dinner, which was a big success! A huge thank you to Karen Hudson for putting us forward, to the staff at Tesco for supporting us and to everyone who donated!
4th Class were learning about igneous rocks so decided to have a look at how igneous rocks are formed!
First we made our own mountain using flour, water and salt. Then we made our mountains turn into volcanoes by creating an explosion!
We used baking soda, washing liquid and vinegar to create our eruption.
We watched the lava explode down the volcano and this lava will harden to form igneous rocks. It was great fun.
On Thursday the 9th of November, 5th class got the chance to visit the LAB art gallery close to our school.
Katy showed us around some of the art work and we all did a great job of sharing our opinions and thoughts on the wonderful work on show.
Sixth Class had great fun in P.E. this week playing ‘Suits’. We had to try get as many of our card suit as possible but we could only turn one at a time. We had to run back to our group and arrange our cards in order and get a full suit to win. We were non-stop moving between running for the cards and arranging them in order. It was a race to the finish line for our final three!!

Rachel Daly from Crumlin Children’s Hospital collects a cheque for €1300 from 5th & 6th class pupils who raised money singing their rap in Connolly Station. Past pupil Brandon who has attended the hospital is also pictured with his mam Amy and Nanny Deirdre, along with Ms. Jordan and Ms. Duffy who organised the fundraiser. Well done to all!
Last Thursday morning some of the children in 5th and 6th class busked in Connolly station to raise money for Crumlin Children’s Hospital.
We sang our original rap ‘What Music Is’ and raised €1300 in one hour. That’s €21 a minute, WOW! People were so generous and we hope the money can help those who need it.

The Green Schools committee have been checking the water meter every week to see how much water we are using as a school.
At a recent meeting they looked at the totals and calculated how much water we used every week. They then found the average amount of water we use per week.
It is 427 litres!
The committee’s next step will be to report this information to classes and advise them on how to reduce their water consumption.
They will continue to check the water meter and we will see if we have reduced the amount of water used!
