The 5th and 6th class girls have designed this poster on interdependence during their sessions with Emma and Ms Bailey.  The poster will be included in Amnesty International’s new Friendship Week brochure which will be sent to every primary school in the country.  A picture of the poster was tweeted by @rightssparks #edchatie yesterday and has already been re-tweeted by many people, including our local TD Marueen O’Sullivan, and Amnesty International who have 20,000 followers!  Well done girls!

Paint Writers!

Nyamka and Ms. Heverin made paint writing pads to use for various activities!

This is what you need to make them:

Sellotape, cardboard, scissors, paint, sandwich bag.

You squeeze some paint into the sandwich bag (not too much) and then seal it. Then cut some cardboard and stick the bag onto it with sellotape.

You can use the paint writer to practice words and sounds and to play lots of different games!

Here is Nyamka using the ones we made 🙂

Report Writing by 1st Class.

1st class have been working so hard since coming back to school in January.

In Ms. Heverin’s Literacy Lift group we have been developing our report writing skills.

Celebrating International Children’s book day

Laureate na nÓg Niamh Sharkey joined with colleagues from Brown Bag Films to celebrate International Children’s Books Day at Rutland Street National School with the launch of Bookbag.

Bookbag is a children’s book gifting initiative, kickstarted by funding from Brown Bag Films and delivered in partnership with Laureate na nÓg and Children’s Books Ireland. Rutland National School is the first school chosen to take part in this scheme; Brownbag and CBI hope to bring books to many more schools in the future.

Under the scheme, every child in the school got a brand new book to take home and keep – a book that is fun, entertaining, high quality and that will encourage reading for the love of it, not just to learn.

Niamh Sharkey believes that reading is a great way to explore new worlds through the imagination and to discover amazing illustrations – no matter how young or old you are.

Thank you so much for our beautiful new books!

We are Writers

As  you all know Rutland National School have put together a collection of writings from all pupils in our school.  We are now accepting orders for our book called “We are Writers”.  The book costs €8.00 and will make an ideal present or become part of your library at home.  We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed writing for it.  Help to keep a good attitude to reading alive in our school and please support this fund raiser.

Pop Art!

Rutland NS are exploring Pop Art at the moment and are creating magnificent pieces of work. Thank you to Emma and Ms. O’Sullivan who have set up the pop art board and have helped classes with sharing ideas and teaching the children the traits of Pop Art.

Here are some photos of our art board and some of the work that the children have created (some unfinished!)

Junior Achievement Success!

A huge congratulations to 5th class who just completed their Junior Achievement programme! Christmas Food Appeal

It’s that time of year again when it is kind to think of others who are less fortunate and our school is participating in a Christmas food appeal. We are encouraging families to send in non-perishable/long shelf life goods. Please do not bring in food that will go stale or food that needs to be put in the fridge. We are collecting for St. Vincent de Paul and Cuan Álainn . Here are some examples of what you could bring in…….
