We worked in pairs for ‘Xs and Os’ and ‘Dots and Boxes’ – which only our teachers would know about from our childhood days! Another group learned how to tackle ‘Sudokus’ which we discovered isn’t as complicated as we first thought – just plenty of logic and reasoning which we’re good at in 5th class! Another group had time to play interactive maths games online. Looking forward to what the week will unfold mathematically!

Mr. Cherry’s class have been very busy and active over the last few weeks. We really enjoyed the school Sports Day and had lots of fun. We recently went on a mini-beast hunt in Mountjoy Square Park and found lots of different creatures living there. We also visited the playground beside the park as part of Active Schools Week.
We have finished all of our tests now and we tried really hard. Next week we are going on our school tour to Fort Lucan, it’s going to be so much fun!
We had a very successful Art Exhibition in May. There was a piece of work displayed from every child in the school.
Look at some of our amazing work.

Second Class recently received the Sacrament of First Confession. Ms. Lawlor and all the boys and girls put a huge amount of work into preparing for this special day. All the children read, sang and answered out all their prayers. It was great to see so many parents attend the ceremony as well. We are now looking forward to a special day on May the 18th when second class will receive The Sacrament of First Holy Communion.
Dee gave us all certificates. Our teacher was very proud. Have a look at our pictures.
There are great preparations underway in sixth class for the Confirmation. We have been reading lots of stories, learning about the fruits and gifts of the spirit and writing prayers ahead of our enrolement ceremony . This ceremony will take place in the classroom next Thursday, 21st March 1.30pm. All parents and sponsors are welcome. Talk to your children about the great work they have been doing as they prepare for this important sacrament.

Well done to all the staff and pupils at Rutland NS for a fantastic Book Week.
All of the children had great fun reading. some read with children from other classes, some with their teacher and some with special guests. We read in the class, in the library and in Easons.
We had a very exciting guest reader in the school, Bill O’Herlihy, who read to the children and parents in 1st classs.
1st class, 2nd class and some pupils from 5th and 6th went to Easons to hear Joe O’Brien read from his fantastic Alfie books.
All the children got vouchers for free books and lots of teachers and classes went to easons to choose these books and buy others.
The Readathon was a great success and has raised lots of money, wghich will be used to buy more books for our school so that our pupils can continue to read interesting, fun and informative books. Thanks to all the children, parents, families and friends who donated!
The children from 4th and 5th class braved the wintry conditions yesterday and reached the semi-finals of the Lord Mayor’s Cup. Unfortunately they were beaten by St. Laurence O’ Tooles and just missed out on the bronze medal. The boys and girls did the school proud and performed brilliantly in all five events – soccer, penalties, running, basketball and wall-climbing.
We certainly have some fantastic athletes in our school and there’s no doubt we’ll be in the hunt for the medals again next year. The future of sport in Rutland NS is looking extremely bright. Well done to everyone involved!
4th and 5th class went on a trip to Glendalough. We had a lovely day. Spring is definitely here! We met up with our friends from St Patrick’s Greystones! We took part in a nature trail and a treasure hunt.
This week is World Book Week. We have lots of exciting book events happening in Rutland NS and the classes will be doing lots of reading. All of the children will get vouchers to get a free book that they can read at home. They will also be doing a Readathon in school and will be looking for sponsorship at home.
Reading is so important and we hope that the children will spend extra time at home reading this week too.
Well done to all the teachers and children who did so much work to celebrate Multicultural Week. Every class had a magnificent display in the hall, along with each class performing a song/poem/dance from the country they studied. 6th class even counted from one to ten in ARABIC! So well done to all! Of course, weeks like this needs lots of preparation and to get us started, Aaron, Cian, Shauna, and Kisha helped with the cooking for our tasting day. We cooked dishes from South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Nepal, Romania, Poland, Ireland and Australia!
We all had great fun sampling the various dishes. Some dishes were quite unusual but it was great to see people being adventurous and tasting them regardless!
The displays in the hall were terrific! We were even able to sample more food here! There were activities and puzzles also. It was great to see parents pop in and look at all our work. Well done to all who were manning their stations and had super answers for all the questions we had about their country!
We have done some fantastic things today in Junior Infants to celebrate our 100th Day of School! We read 100 words on our board and then celebrated reading them by dividing 100 jellies between us all!
We made a snake with 100 cubes, completed 100 seconds of silence, and thought of 100 things that we can be happy about!
As part of Anti Bullying Week we saw a puppet show called Manny the Magnificent Mouse. To celebrate the work we have done during Anti Bullying Week we will be having a Teddy Bears Picnic this Friday in school.
Recently some of our pupils got a chance to review some toys for the Newstalk morning radio show. Kome, Ross, Aaron, Lee, Lennon, Saad, Nathan and Grace all had lots of fun playing with lots of different toys including a Nerf Gun, Elimination Chamber, Moshi Monsters, Moshi Home, Leap Pad, the Napi Tablet, Glen Dragons set, Spiderman and Lego Superheroes. The children spoke about the advantages and disadvantages of all the toys. We are now raffling the toys to raise much needed funds for our school. You can listen to the show on www.newstalk.ie – podcast – Under the cover dated December 8th
Congratulations to everyone who gave fantastic performances on Friday! It was a great day – full of talent, laughter and fun. We are all so proud of every boy and girl who did their very best. Well done to all! Here are a few photos for everyone to enjoy!

We have a lovely new crib for our Christmas Sacred Space.

During the season of Advent, Christians across the world prepare for the celebration of the arrival of the Lord into the world through the birth of His son Jesus Christ. Advent is the time to celebrate light in the midst of darkness. It is also a time to look forward to when Jesus will come a second time.

There were no animals in the manger that Jesus was born in, the Pope has declared as the Christian world gears up towards Christmas next month. He has said that the presence of animals such as cattle and donkeys used in traditional Nativity scenes are based on nothing more other than myth.
Henry from newstalk was in to visit 3rd class to see what they thought of all of this!
The children were on the radio today! Well done to Michael, Nadia, Cian and Ryan!!
Here are some facts about Penguins
• Penguins are never cold.
• They slide on their bellies to get into the water.
• The dad minds the egg while the mam gets the food.
• The mam holds food in her belly and vomits it up for her baby.
• Then the dad gets his own food afterwards.
• They waddle because they have very short legs.
• Penguins are birds but they cannot fly.
• Penguins have sharp beaks to chisel the egg and to catch fish.
• Rockhopper penguins keep their flippers out.
• The mum lays the egg and the dad minds the egg.
• Penguins are really good swimmers.
We’ve had such a busy couple of months here in 4th class. As well as working really hard in class, we have been playing a lot of chess with 5th class and we are improving every week. We visited a local bank in October, where we told them all about products that we had designed ourselves. We also met the Lord Mayor of Dublin in the Smock Alley Theatre. He is a really nice man! We even had a visit from a maths magician, who showed us some great tricks. Just before Halloween we made some delicious chocolate apples. We had great fun dressing up for the Halloween party and we played some really fun games!
Last Thursday First Class went on a great trip. We went to the Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin. We walked up to O’Connell Street and got the bus from there. It was a good journey and no-one got sick on the bus! Phew!!
When we got to the Botanic Gardens we saw lots of things. We saw squirrels, pumpkins, statues, big trees and even a funny eyeball display! We saw giant leaves, pretend parrots, and a beautiful rose garden. We saw girls drawing pictures of the flowers, an apple tree, little cute ducks and then we even saw Ms Bailey there with her other school. We saw a scarecrow, we crossed bridges and we even had our yard there. We saw lily pads and a wishing well too.
Thanks to Betty we had a picnic there as well!
We had a really great day and hope we go on lots more trips in First Class.
First class have a new addition to the class! Declan brought a plant into school last week and with it came a beautiful ladybird. We have called her Lally the Ladybird! Sometimes she is on our Jolly Phonics book and Calum even found her crawling on his hand the other day. We hope she stays with us for a while!

On Monday there was a big assembly. There was gangs of people – mas, das,
kids and teachers. Ms Burke talked first to all of us on the microphone. Then Ms Caffrey talked. She said who won the awards for Junior Infants. Then Ms O’Herlihy took the picture of Junior Infants. Then they sat down. Every teacher came up and told the people who won awards. They all got their picture taken.
6th class made their graduation at assembly. It was good. We all clapped for them. They let us sign their uniforms. They want their uniforms signed so they could remember us from the school.
I really enjoyed myself and hope next year that I might get an award!
I reckon it’s going to be a good game. It will be a tough game for Ireland. Spain have a really good team with people like Casillas. He’s their captain and their goalkeeper. He is the best goal keeper in the world. They also have Iniesta. He’s a brilliant striker. Ireland has a really good team too with players like Robbie Keane, Damien Duff and Stephen Ward and Shay Given. In my opinion I think the result is going to be 3-2 to Spain. I hope I’m wrong though!

When we started football it was hard but as the weeks went by it got a lot easier but hey, practise makes perfect. Dara and Jamie were teaching us. We played matches, did dribbles, toe tapping and we played games .We did all this in Diamond Park .The boys are very good for doing this in their own time. We do this every Wednesday but this Wednesday was the last week. It was a great experience doing football with the boys. We will ALL miss them.
We were really lucky on Wednesday when the Olympic Torch passed right by the end of our road! Our friend from the boxing and former Olympic gold medallist, Michael Carruth was running with the torch. He was then passing it on to Jedward. We saw Michael running with the torch and we even caught a glimpse of Jedward as they passed by us in their bus.
All school tours have been added to the calendar on the school website, which can be found on the right hand side of the homepage.
Don Conroy better watch out! The famous Irish wildlife artist is going to face stiff competition from Emma’s 5th class. Have a look at the amazing oil pastel pictures they did of different animals. We think they should be on display in the National Gallery!
Well done to James McAuley and Bradley Fagan who did the school proud in the ring at the national boxing stadium today! Here are some pictures from the event & the boys with special guest Olympic boxing champion Michael Carruth!!
Click below to watch 3rd class play Ireland’s Call on their tin whistles!

We can name all the ways we get around, people in our community who help us and all the different feelings we can have! Keep up the good work boys and girls!
Well done to all the children, parents and staff who raised money by selling balloons for the balloon race. It was exciting to see the balloons being left off – Thanks Mr Cherry for the wonderful idea and for all the work put in to it!
We had a super week learning all about St. Patrick and getting in to the festive mood!
Bhí gach rang an gnóthach ag déanamh rudaí as Gaeilge. Féach ar na pictiúirí! Bhí a lán spraoi againn!!!
Bhain gach dalta in ár scoil spraoi agus spórt ó Seachtain na Gaeilge!
Rinne gach éinne sár iarracht leis an ngaeilge – go raibh maith agaibh go léir.
Tá súil agam go mbainfidh sibh go léir taitneamh as an deireadh seachtaine.
Last week we celebrated our Intercultural Week. The following is a list of the countries celebrated: Poland, Scotland, Nigeria, Romania, Italy, Mongolia, Saudi Arabia and China.
On Tuesday each class had a Cooking and Tasting Session of traditional dishes from their country. On Wdenesday and Thursday we saw the wonderful work each class did on their country which was put on display in the hall.

First Class had a great time in the Botanic Gardens last week. It was a lovely sunny day. We went on a nature walk and found lots of interesting things! Some children found pine cones and conkers, while other children collected autumn leaves. We saw a squirrel collecting food for the winter and ducks swimming in the pond. We also got to play a few fun games and sang some songs on the way back to school. We all think that the Botanic Gardens are a really cool place to visit!
Fifth class were using clay last week in school. It was part of an art lesson linked to a religion lesson and good fun.
First we rolled the clay into balls and then we flattened it to make it soft.
Then we all thought of an idea that we would like to make with the clay. We all came up with great ideas.
After that we started to shape the clay into pencils holders, ashtrays, faces, bowls and vases.
Next we let them dry on the counter for two days.
Eventually we painted them with bright colours and we let them dry again.
Finally we are allowed to bring them home today. But we have taken a photo to show you how good they turned out.
We had loads of fun with clay, we are glad they turned out very well. We hope we can use clay again.
Hello and a big welcome to all our new Junior Infants!
We had a great but tiring week in school last week – it took us a while to explore our new room and play with our new toys!
This week we have started our work in all our new books. We are making a really big effort and trying hard!
Watch this space for our photos! Miss Caffrey
The first day back was Tuesday the 30th of August. We got lots of new books and copies and we put our names on them. That was the only work we did that day. It was our first day in our new classroom and we really like it because it’s huge, it has a great view and we’re beside the yard.
We have a new teacher, Miss Quinn. We are in Fifth class and so we have to work hard this year. The books are very big. We have a new homework journal with the school rules in it.
We’re four days in school now and it’s going great so far. For the rest of the year we will work hard , try our best and be kind to each other.
We went to visit Glenroe farm in Co. Wicklow. We had a brilliant day. When we got back to school we made this video. We hope you like it.
We had a great time copying the work of artist Jackson Pollock this week. We dipped marbles in different coloured paint and rolled them around on trays that had our pages stuck to them. It was so much fun! We look like we are concentrating very hard!!
3rd class have been busy making a video to go with their O Happy Day song. We hope you like it! It will also be on display at the IFestival in the Ilac Library in the next few weeks.
