Second Class recently received the Sacrament of First Confession. Ms. Lawlor and all the boys and girls put a huge amount of work into preparing for this special day. All the children read, sang and answered out all their prayers. It was great to see so many parents attend the ceremony as well. We are now looking forward to a special day on May the 18th when second class will receive The Sacrament of First Holy Communion.

We have been reading lots of stories, learning about the fruits and gifts of the spirit and writing prayers ahead of our enrolement ceremony . This ceremony will take place in the classroom next Thursday, 21st March 1.30pm. All parents and sponsors are welcome. Talk to your children about the great work they have been doing as they prepare for this important sacrament.

Well done to all the staff and pupils at Rutland NS for a fantastic Book Week.
All of the children had great fun reading. some read with children from other classes, some with their teacher and some with special guests. We read in the class, in the library and in Easons.
We had a very exciting guest reader in the school, Bill O’Herlihy, who read to the children and parents in 1st classs.
1st class, 2nd class and some pupils from 5th and 6th went to Easons to hear Joe O’Brien read from his fantastic Alfie books.
All the children got vouchers for free books and lots of teachers and classes went to easons to choose these books and buy others.
The Readathon was a great success and has raised lots of money, wghich will be used to buy more books for our school so that our pupils can continue to read interesting, fun and informative books. Thanks to all the children, parents, families and friends who donated!
3rd class got to go to the Ark theatre to see the performance Zoe’s play – it was brilliant! We got a huge fright when the wolves came out onto the set!! It was very good and we recommend it highly. Well done to everyone who behaved so well walking there and back. Here is a picture of us along by the river Liffey!
The children from 4th and 5th class braved the wintry conditions yesterday and reached the semi-finals of the Lord Mayor’s Cup. Unfortunately they were beaten by St. Laurence O’ Tooles and just missed out on the bronze medal. The boys and girls did the school proud and performed brilliantly in all five events – soccer, penalties, running, basketball and wall-climbing.
We certainly have some fantastic athletes in our school and there’s no doubt we’ll be in the hunt for the medals again next year. The future of sport in Rutland NS is looking extremely bright. Well done to everyone involved!

Reading is so important and we hope that the children will spend extra time at home reading this week too.
Well done to all the teachers and children who did so much work to celebrate Multicultural Week. Every class had a magnificent display in the hall, along with each class performing a song/poem/dance from the country they studied. 6th class even counted from one to ten in ARABIC! So well done to all! Of course, weeks like this needs lots of preparation and to get us started, Aaron, Cian, Shauna, and Kisha helped with the cooking for our tasting day. We cooked dishes from South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Nepal, Romania, Poland, Ireland and Australia!
We all had great fun sampling the various dishes. Some dishes were quite unusual but it was great to see people being adventurous and tasting them regardless!
The displays in the hall were terrific! We were even able to sample more food here! There were activities and puzzles also. It was great to see parents pop in and look at all our work. Well done to all who were manning their stations and had super answers for all the questions we had about their country!

The Garda Mounted unit visited our school recently and we asked them LOADS of questions about what it is like to be on the horse for a day! The Gardaí were most helpful in answering our questions and inspired some of us into wanting to do this job when we grow up!! We learned that the horses were SEVENTEEN hands tall, which helps the Gardaí to spot crime more easily when mounted upon them.
Here is a link to a video of Garda Brendan Duffy explaining all about the unit: http://youtu.be/LuwaGB08f2c
Here are some functions of the mounted support unit:
- Crime prevention and detection patrols – supporting mainstream policing

Senior Infants were the first class to use our new activity which helps us learn our letters and their sounds. ‘Hot Dots’ game has a talking pen, which we called the wand! The wand told us if we were right or wrong on our answer. It was a fun way to check our reading!
First Class had a great time learning all about special art from Australia. It’s called Aboriginal Art. This week we made some Aboriginal paintings using the dot technique.
ique. Have a look at us making our art.

3rd class have been enjoying D.E.A.R time. It means Drop Everything And Read. Here are some of the benefits and advantages of D.E.A.R time:
- DEAR gives children the opportunity to read books of their own choice. So much of what we do in school involves books and reading material selected by the teacher. DEAR time lets children pick whatever reading material they want to just enjoy.
- DEAR allows children to see that reading for fun and pleasure is a valuable experience.
- DEAR can help develop better writing skills. The more children read, the more they are exposed to the written word – and that will lead to better reading and writing skills.
Here we are doing it straight after yard to get back into working mode!
We have a lovely new crib for our Christmas Sacred Space.

During the season of Advent, Christians across the world prepare for the celebration of the arrival of the Lord into the world through the birth of His son Jesus Christ. Advent is the time to celebrate light in the midst of darkness. It is also a time to look forward to when Jesus will come a second time.

There were no animals in the manger that Jesus was born in, the Pope has declared as the Christian world gears up towards Christmas next month. He has said that the presence of animals such as cattle and donkeys used in traditional Nativity scenes are based on nothing more other than myth.
Henry from newstalk was in to visit 3rd class to see what they thought of all of this!
The children were on the radio today! Well done to Michael, Nadia, Cian and Ryan!!
This little girl is called Lily-Mae. She is four years old and lives in Galway. She has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called neuroblastoma. She loves dinosaurs and dancing. She is very sick at the moment but with the help of lots of people she will be dancing again soon! Paddy Casey, Mickey Joe Harte, Mundy and many more singers got together with a choir of 250 people to record Elton John’s ‘Tiny Dancer’ song. They are trying to get it to number one for Christmas. It went on sale on itunes today and it is already number one there!! It costs just 99 cent and every cent goes to help families like Lily-Maye’s family.
For their Christmas concert performance 3rd class are going to sing Tiny Dancer. We cannot wait. We’re going to send Lily-Mae photographs and a video of us singing it and as Nadia said, this will make her feel loved. 🙂

We’ve had such a busy couple of months here in 4th class. As well as working really hard in class, we have been playing a lot of chess with 5th class and we are improving every week. We visited a local bank in October, where we told them all about products that we had designed ourselves. We also met the Lord Mayor of Dublin in the Smock Alley Theatre. He is a really nice man! We even had a visit from a maths magician, who showed us some great tricks. Just before Halloween we made some delicious chocolate apples. We had great fun dressing up for the Halloween party and we played some really fun games!
Last Thursday First Class went on a great trip. We went to the Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin. We walked up to O’Connell Street and got the bus from there. It was a good journey and no-one got sick on the bus! Phew!!
When we got to the Botanic Gardens we saw lots of things. We saw squirrels, pumpkins, statues, big trees and even a funny eyeball display! We saw giant leaves, pretend parrots, and a beautiful rose garden. We saw girls drawing pictures of the flowers, an apple tree, little cute ducks and then we even saw Ms Bailey there with her other school. On Monday there was a big assembly. There was gangs of people – mas, das,
kids and teachers. Ms Burke talked first to all of us on the microphone. Then Ms Caffrey talked. She said who won the awards for Junior Infants. Then Ms O’Herlihy took the picture of Junior Infants. Then they sat down. Every teacher came up and told the people who won awards. They all got their picture taken.
6th class made their graduation at assembly. It was good. We all clapped for them. They let us sign their uniforms. They want their uniforms signed so they could remember us from the school.
I really enjoyed myself and hope next year that I might get an award!
5th class had their last ever Italian class yesterday with Miss O’Connor. Look at their belle pictures below!

I reckon it’s going to be a good game. It will be a tough game for Ireland. Spain have a really good team with people like Casillas. He’s their captain and their goalkeeper. He is the best goal keeper in the world. They also have Iniesta. He’s a brilliant striker. Ireland has a really good team too with players like Robbie Keane, Damien Duff and Stephen Ward and Shay Given. In my opinion I think the result is going to be 3-2 to Spain. I hope I’m wrong though!

When we started football it was hard but as the weeks went by it got a lot easier but hey, practise makes perfect. Dara and Jamie were teaching us. We played matches, did dribbles, toe tapping and we played games .We did all this in Diamond Park .The boys are very good for doing this in their own time. We do this every Wednesday but this Wednesday was the last week. It was a great experience doing football with the boys. We will ALL miss them.
We were really lucky on Wednesday when the Olympic Torch passed right by the end of our road! Our friend from the boxing and former Olympic gold medallist, Michael Carruth was running with the torch. He was then passing it on to Jedward. We saw Michael running with the torch and we even caught a glimpse of Jedward as they passed by us in their bus.
All school tours have been added to the calendar on the school website, which can be found on the right hand side of the homepage.
Don Conroy better watch out! The famous Irish wildlife artist is going to face stiff competition from Emma’s 5th class. Have a look at the amazing oil pastel pictures they did of different animals. We think they should be on display in the National Gallery!
Well done to James McAuley and Bradley Fagan who did the school proud in the ring at the national boxing stadium today! Here are some pictures from the event & the boys with special guest Olympic boxing champion Michael Carruth!!

We have a lovely May altar at the entrance to the canteen. Please come and pray, leave a prayer for Mary in the special prayer box or perhaps complete the ‘Hail Mary’ prayer filling in the blanks using words from the jar.
We have been awarded our green flag for working so hard on litter and waste ; so well done to everybody !
Keep up the good work around the school !

We went to a Live History show in Larkin College where we saw (and tried out!) guns and uniforms that the soldiers and people used to have back in those days. It was very interesting.[imagebrowser id=4]
We had loads of fun with Ms. Heverin’s 6th Class on World Book Day. The 6th Class pupils chose books to read to us in small groups. Then they helped us to create images of different parts of the story. Great fun was had by all!
