As you all know Rutland National School have put together a collection of writings from all pupils in our school. We are now accepting orders for our book called “We are Writers”. The book costs €8.00 and will make an ideal present or become part of your library at home. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed writing for it. Help to keep a good attitude to reading alive in our school and please support this fund raiser.
Rutland NS are exploring Pop Art at the moment and are creating magnificent pieces of work. Thank you to Emma and Ms. O’Sullivan who have set up the pop art board and have helped classes with sharing ideas and teaching the children the traits of Pop Art.
Here are some photos of our art board and some of the work that the children have created (some unfinished!)

Everybody in Rutland N.S is working hard towards getting our second green flag. As well as continuing to separate our waste in food, paper and general waste bins and keeping our school litter free, we are reducing the amount of energy we use in our school. The energy monitors in the classrooms are checking that lights are turned off, standby switches are off, heat is turned down to 18 degrees and doors are closed where possible. This is good for the environment and for our pockets !
Here are the fourth class children with the code for energy:
Thanks so much to Tony, who not only comes in on Tuesdays for Paired Reading, but is also coming in to us for Badminton coaching! He has taught us many a Badminton technique already, after just 2 sessions! We look forward to perfecting our Badminton skills over the next few weeks 🙂
We are so lucky to have a fully stocked library in our school. We borrow books every Tuesday morning. Some of us are even trained up as librarians and we are experts at scanning back/scanning out books to each other!!

We had lots of fun last week for ‘Science Week’. We worked with marbles and the effect of ‘stored energy’ to move a stationary marble when the first one is moved; We also experimented with milk, in the experiment named ‘Milk + Soap = MAGIC!’ When we added the food colouring and the soap to the milk, we saw the colours chase the fat in the milk and it almost looked like a marble! We also made our own Rockets – so everyone BEWARE!!
3rd class did experiments for Senior Infants for Science week! We loved showing them how all of the experiments work!! We had a great time and hope Senior Infants were impressed with our skills!
- balloon rocket on a string
- skewer through a balloon! it doesn’t burst
- bread soda and vinegar reaction to blow up balloon
- it’s filling up!
- egg floating in salty water and sinking in non-salty water
- catching bubbles on gloves! they don’t burst!
- bouncing a bubble on a glove!
- using soap to break up the fat in milk.
- Douglas showing the bread soda
- Alex with the balloon
- Noor looks impressed!
- Grace adding the soap to the milk
- Seán and Andreea are surprised!
- Tia explaining about the egg floating in the salty water
- Grace and Andreea
- Craig putting a knot in the balloon
- Senior Infants looking impressed
- Lexie is standing well back!!
- The dark vinegar caused more of a reaction
- Craig put the skewer through two balloons!!
- We did it!
- All the girls
- Millie explaining the egg float experiment
- Douglas and Alex concentrating
- Will the egg float or sink??
- Feeling the balloon!

We met poor Eggward last week, who was very sad and lonely. When placed in the water, he sank straight to the bottom 🙁 Luckily, 5th class are ‘egg-stremely’ friendly so we all had a turn to cheer him up by telling him something nice, funny, or just being friendly in general (adding salt each time!). Thankfully, he rose to the top of the water where he now resides 🙂 He is much happier now 🙂

We have worked really hard to recreate some of his art, see the pictures below for some of our great art work.
The gardaí visited our classroom yesterday and warned us about the dangers of bonfires around Halloween time. We also read a message from the Lord Mayor of Dublin. Here is the message below……..
Dublin Fire Brigade has issued a warning on the dangers of unregulated bonfires and illegal fireworks, which result in catastrophic injuries each year including the loss of fingers and sometimes entire hands, and severe burns to the body and face.
“All bonfires are illegal – and our message is: do not go to them, and if you are aware of any material being stockpiled, please report it to us in confidence,” Lord Mayor of Dublin Oisín Quinn said.

We had great fun on Thursday of this week when senior infants and 5th class paired up to do various maths games and activities! 5th class loved helping the younger boys and girls and were like teachers teaching them new maths games! Well done to Senior Infants also who were well able for the maths! Well done to all 🙂
Today for maths, we abandoned our topic for this week, and took to learning a few ancient maths games! We worked in pairs for ‘Xs and Os’ and ‘Dots and Boxes’ – which only our teachers would know about from our childhood days! Another group learned how to tackle ‘Sudokus’ which we discovered isn’t as complicated as we first thought – just plenty of logic and reasoning which we’re good at in 5th class! Another group had time to play interactive maths games online. Looking forward to what the week will unfold mathematically!

Hello from 6th Class,
We’ve been working our socks off up on the top corridor for the last few weeks. Mr. Cherry is over the moon with the effort we have been putting into our work. We’ve an exciting year ahead with lots of exciting trips and we’ve plenty of work to do in preparation for our Confirmation in June. It’s a really exciting time for us at the moment as we are all trying to decide which secondary school we will go to next year. Take a look at the pictures we’ve put up to see what work we’ve been doing since September !

As part of our Geography lesson last week, 3rd class learned all about the many different rocks and the ways in which they are used. Here we are investigating their texture and appearance…..
- Kelly inspecting the rocks
- Calvin liking this one!
- Granite rock, do you know how this might be used in our houses?
- Calvin said he has a lovely marble table at home
- Limestone rock
- Douglas and Alex getting very excited about the rocks!

It’s hard to believe we’re in to October already! We had a busy September in room 17. We are well and truly settled in now! Here are a few pictures of what we have been up to the past month …
We are learning more about our senses. We tried to build up our blocks without our sight which was extremely difficult!
Different parts of our hands and arms are more sensitive to touch!
We had our first day of handball! It was unusual at first, but we got the hang of it! It was great fun!

We are making big efforts with our narrative writing and our problem solving in Maths ! Here we are working diligently ……

We had a great time constructing Hundertwasser inspired buildings,
We decided on how to construct the buildings and stuck on cardboard boxes and cartons with masking tape.
Then we used wallpaper paste and print paper to cover our buildings.
When they were dry we painted them bright colours.
Then we decorated them with some fabric and fibre!
We have a writing tree in our class to help us with ideas for free writing. For example:
- going to the dentist
- if I won the lotto
- writing a complaint
- writing a letter to the caretaker Pat
We do our free writing every morning when we come into our class. Some people in the class are great at choosing different topics each day and their copies are so interesting to read!
Here we are busy at work……………
The school will re-open Thursday 29th of August

Saad and Joslyn were absent from the photo.
Mr. Cherry’s class have been very busy and active over the last few weeks. We really enjoyed the school Sports Day and had lots of fun. We recently went on a mini-beast hunt in Mountjoy Square Park and found lots of different creatures living there. We also visited the playground beside the park as part of Active Schools Week.
We have finished all of our tests now and we tried really hard. Next week we are going on our school tour to Fort Lucan, it’s going to be so much fun!
We had a very successful Art Exhibition in May. There was a piece of work displayed from every child in the school.

Well done to all our pupils who have been very busy completing end of year tests.
All your hard work during the year paid off.

The school is working on getting a second green flag for energy. We are trying to switch off lights and school appliances when they are not needed.
Children recently undertook an appliance audit in the school. Every class is making an effort to completely turn off computers, printers and lights every afternoon at home time. We are keeping up the good work with recycling and reducing litter and waste.
